Plácido Domingo’s Role
in the OPERALIA Contest

Plácido Domingo explains
why he has founded OPERALIA:

"Over the years I have come to appreciate the difficulties young opera singers have in forming careers. My goal is to pave the way for young artists by helping them overcome obstacles through exposure to the finest professionals. There are beautiful and interesting voices to be found all over the world, but young singers frequently lack proper vocal and dramatic direction as well as effective career guidance.

My pupose is to contribute in identifying the best voices but, above all, individuals whose personality, character and powers of interpretation show promise of the finished artist. Individuals such as these become tomorrow’s stars.

The early stages of the contest is rigorous. It is not only a question of voice and vocal technique, but also of acting talent, intensity and theatrical presence. This is why the jury is not exclusively made up of great singers. The young artists must also have access to the best coaches, managers, directors and producers. Without all of them, the career of the young artist will not find its proper form and direction.

I hope that OPERALIA has a long life. My joy is to contribute by offering to the opera world the great talents of the years to come."

Plácido Domingo is always present throughout the contest. He does not vote but supervises the course of events. Plácido Domingo selects the members of the Jury amongst the famous personalities in the musical world ranging from theatre directors to conductors and distinguished singers. Judges appointed for the revision of the audio-cassettes upon application cannot be members of the Jury.

Most important, Plácido Domingo is in a sense a patron not only of the winners but of many of the competitors, whether engaging them for his own companies and projects, or recommending them for other engagements around the world.
