OPERALIA-World Opera Contest Plácido Domingo
Seven outstanding winners
An audience of more than 900 people gathered in the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus
concert hall in Friedrichshafen on July 23, 2003, to witness the
exciting final concert of OPERALIA-World Opera Contest Plácido
Domingo 2003. 13 young singers interpreted one aria each, selected
by themselves. Seven artists performed in the "Zarzuela"
category. The interpretations were accompanied by the "Suedwestdeutsche
Philharmonie Konstanz" and Sir Lawrence Foster, conductor.
The international jury of music experts was impressed by the extraordinary
artistic quality of all performances, but at 11 p.m. Plácido
Domingo was pleased to be able to announce the winners´
names. A first in OPERALIA´s history: One candidate received
three prizes altogether.
The winners in the "Opera" category:
1. Prize ($ 50.000): Adriana
Damato, Italy, Soprano, 27 years
2. Prize ($ 30.000): Giuseppe
Gipali, Albania, Tenor, 30 years
3. Prize ($ 25.000 each): Israel
Lozano, Spain, Tenor, 28 years and
Jesus
Garcia, USA, Tenor, 26 years
The winners in the "Zarzuela" category:
The Zarzuela prizes are awarded in honour of the mother and the
father of Plácido Domingo. All four winners in this category
are receiving $ 10.000.

The "Prize of the Audience" ($ 10.000) was voted
on by the audience in the concert hall. One candidate received
an overwhelming majority of the votes:

Plácido Domingo gave an Open Air Gala Concert together
with all the winners of OPERALIA 2003 on the Isle of Mainau on
July 26, 2003. The artists were accompanied by the "Rundunk-Sinfonieorchester
Saarbruecken" and Lawrence Foster, conductor.
The OPERALIA Gala Concert "Die Parade der Sieger" with
Plácido Domingo and all the winners of OPERALIA 2003 will
be televised on Saturday, 16 August 2003, 20.15 hrs (8.15 pm)
at 3SAT. "Der Sängerstreit vom Bodensee", a documentation
of OPERALIA 2003 will be shown before at 19.20 hrs (7.20 pm) on
the same channel.
